What is Psychotherapy?

Often referred to as 'Talk Therapy' a psychotherapy session focuses on the clients emotional and behavioural difficulties often going back to early childhood to discover the reason why each individual subconsciously chose certain defenses and behaviours.  Understanding this aspect of your personal makeup allows the client to take control of their lives and day to day reactions by consciously choosing to let go, accept or change certain behaviours.  This, in time, allows the client to live a full and satisfying life. 

Psycho-dynamic Psychotherapy

This is the approach that I use. Psychodynamic Therapy encourages the client to explore and discuss all of their emotions.  It helps the client put words to feelings and emotions that he/she may not have previously recognised and explores the aspects of themselves that are not fully known or hidden (often referred to as the shadow self).  The relationship between the therapist and the client plays a fundamental role in Psychodynamic Therapy.

There are many reasons why people choose Psychotherapy or Counselling.  Below are some of the more common reasons- we do not like labeling or categorising clients, however, among the most common issues are;

Anxiety, Depression, Stress, Bereavement, Anger Management issues, Control issues, Addictions, Eating Disorders, Childhood Trauma, Obsessive Compulsive Behaviour, Low Self Esteem, Work Related Issues, Relationship problems.

COGNITIVE BEHAVIOURAL THERAPY

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy often referred to as CBT is a solution focused therapy and can most often be a short term therapy of between 6 and 24 weekly or fortnightly sessions. 

It is based on the relationship between thoughts, feelings and behaviour. How you feel depends on your thoughts and beliefs (cognition) and this influences your behaviour. With the help of your therapist, you can identify thoughts and behaviour that are unhelpful, learn how to change this pattern of thinking and behaviour and effectively begin to make more productive choices that will lead to a more positive and satisfying life. 

CBT is used to treat many issues including the following:

Anxiety, Panic attacks, Depression, Phobias, Eating Disorders, OCD (Obsessive Compulsive Disorder) and Stress related issues.
